Position: Zoological Intern: Life Support Systems
Reports To: LLPA LSS Manager
Position Summary:
The LSS Intern is responsible for observing and assisting the LSS team with routine maintenance on Life Support Systems, as well as preventative maintenance on LSS components. Daily responsibilities will include, but are not limited to: Cleaning LSS areas, daily maintenance of LSS systems, routine maintenance of LSS components, running water quality tests, recording system and component maintenance, and assisting LSS staff with work orders and other projects.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Routine maintenance of Life Support Systems
• Water Quality Testing
• General Cleaning and Organizing of LSS areas
• Recirculating System Research and Obtaining a basic understanding of the theory used is LSS
• Adhere to safety protocols
• Complete all quizzes and evaluations after retaining information/knowledge from hands on and classroom lessons.
• Completion of all assigned projects prior to end of internship.
• Other duties as assigned.

Education and Pre-requisites

Education:

• Must have completed a minimum of sophomore year at an accredited college or university.
• Working toward obtaining a degree in a related field (Animal Sciences, Civil/Environmental Engineering, Biology, Ecology, Conservation, etc).

Critical Skills/Competencies:
• Must be able to follow basic instruction.
• Must demonstrate attention to detail.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• With training, have a basic knowledge and understanding of what is needed to become a member of the Life Support Systems team.
• With training, be able to identify all LSS components, understand typical process flows, and troubleshooting basic LSS related problems.

Scope of Position:
The LSS Intern must commit to 20 hours per week. The duration of the internship will be from February 13, 2017 through April 23, 2017 for a total of 10 weeks.
Physical Demands of the Job:
• This opportunity requires long periods of standing, crouching, kneeling, lifting, and walking.
• Must be able to lift 50 pounds.

Support Provided:
It is the responsibility of the Volunteer Services Department to:
• Maintain records for all active interns.
• Issue each intern an identification badge and uniform shirt(s).
• Provide ongoing support and assistance with intern/staff relationships.
• Administer and provide information regarding opportunity and benefits available for active interns.
• Provide a written reference pertaining to the intern’s experience (hours contributed, length of commitment, job description) as requested.

This is an unpaid internship.
