Owned and operated by Metro Regional Government, the Oregon Zoo has an annual attendance of over 1.6 million visitors. The zoo located along the MAX light rail line, just minutes from downtown Portland, is highly regarded nationally, regionally and locally. The Oregon Zoo is home to over 2,000 animals representing 225 species of amphibians, birds, fish, invertebrates and mammals.

It’s an exciting time at the zoo! The new master plan includes a strong focus on water and energy conservation and improved sustainability of all zoo operations.

The veterinarian will work in collaboration with the rest of the Animal Health team to achieve the following:
• Maintains and promotes the animal health care program through the use of current preventative medicine, diagnostics and treatment practices.
• Maximizes the reproductive potential of endangered species through development of specialized veterinary medical practices.
• Develops programs to limit zoonotic disease transmission and transmission of disease between animals.
• Consults on the design of new exhibits.
• Serves as a resource for all zoo staff on issues related to animal health.
• Leads work of Veterinary Technicians and Animal Hospital Keepers, and other personnel in the administration of medical treatments and during procedures.
• Consults on zoo pest control program to ensure animal safety.
• Acts as a consultant in animal welfare concern. Receives supervision from the Hospital Administrator.
