Description

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation’s largest animal advocacy organization, is seeking a Senior Animal Caregiver for the Black Beauty Ranch in Murchison, TX. The main responsibilities of this position include evaluating the behavioral status and temperament of the horses ensuring that proper care is given.

This position will be responsible for:
Overseeing the health and well-being of all animals in assigned department;
Inspecting enclosures/pastures etc. to ensure proper care, cleanliness, maintenance and safety of animals, their habitats and our facilities;
Being aware of the changing needs of animals in different temperatures and oversee seasonal changes and needs;
Maintaining and reviewing necessary records or logs relating to animal safety, human safety, enclosure integrity, and damages and ensures they meet/exceed all required federal/state/local regulations;
Working with the veterinarian to research proper nutrition requirements for animals in assigned department;
Ensuring staff is properly trained and assisting in preparation and distribution of feed for all animals according to dietary guidelines and feeding schedules;
Observing animals for signs of illness or injury; administering medications or treatments to ill/injured animals under direction from veterinarian;
Serving on the chemical immobilization team as needed;
Performing animal care shifts as needed;
Training, mentoring, and developing staff, interns, and volunteers in departmental procedures;
Interacting with the public on the phone, email, and in person during animal intakes, donation drop-offs, tours, interviews, and fundraisers;
Repairing and renovating existing animal pens and assisting in the construction and design of new pens/facilities;
Ordering and monitoring supplies for food products, medications, medical equipment and supplies; organizing storage, and stocking supplies;
Performing landscaping/grounds keeping duties;
Cleaning common areas, storage areas, pens, cages, and washing and storing laundry.

Education and Pre-requisites

High School diploma or equivalent experience required;
Minimum five years of progressive experience in equine husbandry and/or degrees in equine management; experience with feral equines a plus;
Must be able to use a computer and have basic knowledge of Microsoft Word/Excel;
Demonstrated critical thinking and ability to handle complex situations with sound judgment and problem solving skills;
Excellent interpersonal skills;
Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to juggle multiple competing tasks and demands;
Must remain current in CPR and first-aid certification;
Must know basic principles of operant conditioning in a positive reinforcement and protected contact system;
Must have (or be able to obtain) valid driver’s license and provide proof of personal automobile insurance;
Must have or obtain and maintain an up-to-date rabies prophylaxis and titer;
Must be able to move/lift pounds;
Must be able to endure occasional long workdays (up to hours) and maintain focus, accuracy and physical activities required by job;
