Description

The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County is seeking two Live Animal Keepers who are responsible for the daily maintenance and care of the indoor and outdoor live animal habitats for reptiles, amphibians, and arthropods in any space where they are exhibited at NHM such as Nature Gardens, Insect Zoo, and Nature Lab.

Primary Responsibilities:

· Maintenance of all live animal exhibits/behind-the-scenes areas at the Natural History Museum (NHM) and Tar Pits Museum sites.

· Attends to sick, stressed, and injured animals in accordance with procedures established by veterinary staff and Vertebrate/Invertebrate Live Animal Program Managers.

· Maintains accurate records.

Technical Responsibilities:

· Monitors and troubleshoots all facility, equipment, husbandry and health issues as they relate to animal health and well-being.

· Implements procedures recommended by consulting veterinarian.

· Adhering to all USDA, DFW, DEA, veterinary premise, and city permit requirements.

· Care of venomous snakes in accordance with all NHM policies regarding handling, safety, and emergency response.

Educational Responsibilities:

· Interacts with visitors, answers public inquiries, delivers education programs, and participates in public relations activities.

· Serves as Museum advocate and interpretation professional relating to all live animal programs and exhibits.

Additional knowledge, skills, & abilities required for this position:

· Excellent communication and strong interpersonal skills.

· Ability to work safely and efficiently around live animals in a way that promotes well-being of live animals and staff.

· Ability to cover shifts for fellow Live Animal Keeper including holidays, weekends and sick days.

· Use of safety equipment and clothing to protect live animals and staff.

· Ability to walk, stand, work outdoors in variable weather, lift 50lbs.

Education and Pre-requisites

Education, Certificates, Experience, or Licenses required: (Note that pet ownership does not substitute for professional experience.)

Must possess at least one of the following:

1. Minimum 1-2 years of course work or an Associate of Science degree in Zoology, Biology, or related field
2. Minimum 1-2 years of hands-on experience at a professional husbandry facility
3. Accredited certification in exotic animal husbandry

And:
· Demonstrated knowledge of reptile, amphibian, and small mammal biology.
· Possess valid California driver’s license.

Compensation and benefits

Salary is $15/hour. One position is a full-time, regular, non-exempt position with excellent benefits offered, the second position is a part-time, regular, non-exempt position.
