Description

The California Wolf Center is a state-wide organization dedicated to wolf recovery in the wild. We accomplish our mission through leadership in innovative conservation efforts, engaging education programs and public outreach, and research on wolf biology and behavior. The Director of Development is responsible for helping further the mission of the organization by managing development efforts to sustain Southern California operations through an aggressive and diversified fundraising strategy.

The primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
• Creating and managing a donor stewardship plan to improve donor retention
• Developing social media fundraising strategies, including crowdfunding and MobileCause campaigns
• Managing the grant funding process, including letter of inquiries, proposals, acknowledgements and follow up reports
• Crafting and sending out email newsletters, alerts, breaking news and general organization communication with constituents
• Writing donor appeals and other content for fundraising
• Identifying potential donors and cultivating new and existing donor relationships
• Organizing and entering donor and member data into a database
• Assisting with donor and member communication
• Building the California Wolf Center’s membership base
• Identifying funding opportunities through private foundations and corporations
• Cultivating community and organizational partnerships
• Building community support through fundraising and outreach/ education efforts
• Identifying new and creative fundraising opportunities
• Creating and managing a fundraising calendar to ensure fundraising timelines are met
• Increasing volunteer staff in leadership and support roles relating to development
• Engaging the Board of Directors, staff, and volunteers in supporting fundraising efforts
• Working with the California Wolf Center Advancement Committee
• Working with the California Wolf Center Events Committee to plan and implement fundraising events
• Working with the California Wolf Center Budget Committee to ensure revenue targets are met and growth opportunities are successfully actualized
• Keeping informed about new and evolving fundraising trends and being opportunistic in pursuing fundraising and promotion
• Identifying opportunities to generally raise the profile of the California Wolf Center
• Offering ideas and assistance to help the organization become more successful
• Evaluating and ensuring organizational alignment with the cause
• Guiding the Board of Directors in furthering the mission of the organization as it relates to fundraising, marketing and community engagement
• Keeping abreast of wolf conservation actions and related news, particularly related to the conservation activities conducted in the Southern California office

Education and Pre-requisites

• Commitment to excellence in furthering the mission of the California Wolf Center
• Four-year degree or currently enrolled in college or university working towards degree. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above.
• Willingness to commute to Julian, CA to work on-site periodically, with the majority of work taking place remotely (home office equipment will be required)
• Travel may be required to meet with donors, attend meetings, and/ or participate in events
• Flexible work schedule, though some weekend and/ or holiday availability may be required
• Excellent writing and editing skills, both technical and creative
• Strong public speaking skills
• Excellent customer service skills (in person, over the phone, and via email)
• Good computer skills, including but not limited to typing, use of email, data entry and database management, use of word processing software, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft PowerPoint
• Highly organized with excellent time management skills
• Good listening skills
• Ability to communicate effectively and establish a good rapport with staff, volunteers, board members, and members and donors.
• Ability to interact with visiting public, donors, and members in a professional, friendly and courteous manner
• Ability to multi-task
• Ability to respond quickly to changing priorities
• Willingness to work on a team or in a group
• Self-motivated

• The noise level in the on-site work environment is usually moderate. Requires occasional work where sounds and noise levels are distracting.

• Must be able to lift 35 pounds unassisted
• Requires occasional work in the direct presence of animals, primarily dogs and wolves
• May require duties and decisions that impact the results of co-workers, visitors, or the organization

Compensation and benefits

This is a part time independent contractor position. The salary will be $31,200 per year (to be paid in monthly increments of $2600 per month).
