Position: Aquarium Presenter—Education

Reports to: Public Programs Manager

Position Summary:

The Aquarium Presenter is the essential link between the visitors and the animals of the Loveland Living Planet Aquarium (LLPA). Presenter will deliver engaging, high-energy and accurate educational performances to the visitors and guests of LLPA. Presenter will interact in a positive and pleasant manner with LLPA visitors of all ages on a variety of topics, both planned and impromptu to help inspire people to appreciate animals, explore the natural world, and discover the hidden scientist within. All interactions and presentations are designed to ensure all guests receive a memorable and world class experience.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Monitor guests and animals at the touch pools and open areas; ensure animal safety and entertain guests with animal facts, jokes, and stories.
• Provide extraordinary, world class edutainment and deliver dynamic, accurate, and exciting educational presentations to visitors on a variety of LLPA topics, both planned and impromptu.
• Interact with guests in a positive and jovial manner and anticipate their needs; strike up friendly conversation and be genuinely interested in our guests continuously throughout your shift.
• Interact with divers, husbandry members, and others who are within the exhibits.
• Assist other departments, including guest services and husbandry, with visitor and animal safety and the overall LLPA experience.
• Stay current with the daily schedule, animal status, current research, and background information.
• Operate computers, microphones, and other electronic equipment in an efficient and thoughtful manner.
• Observe guest attendance at programs and maintain accurate numbers to the best of your ability.
• Prepare, manage and utilize presentation supplies and materials appropriately.
• Upon completion of a sufficient training period, safely handle a variety of animals (spiders, snakes, insects, lizards, etc.) while presenting.
• Utilize office time (depending on departmental needs) to create additional programming
• Assist in Education events and additional programs, such as scouts, summer camps, and Zzz’s in the Seas.
• Understand, support and share with others LLPA’s mission, vision, and purpose.
• Inspire others to discover the wonders of nature and an appreciation for science so that guests carry this enthusiasm with them even after they leave LLPA.
• Report animal questions to appropriate staff, depending on the content and severity.
• Inform managers of any issues; help streamline our policies and processes.
• Assist in maintaining a fun and clean working environment; ensure all education areas are kept clean, organized and hazard free.
• Adhere to all safety protocols.
• Remain calm and collected when receiving feedback from guests, staff, and managers.
• Project a positive image of LLPA.
• Perform general functions under general supervision.
• Wear issued uniforms and costumes and adhere to dress code standards.
• Other duties as assigned.

Education and Pre-requisites

Education:

Experience working in a job-related field, including teaching, performing, and/or anything pertaining to the field of science. College courses in a relevant field or equivalent business experience/knowledge is preferred.

Critical Skills/Competencies:

Excellent oral and written communication skills are required along with proficiency in all Microsoft Office applications. Possess superior customer service skills and be willing to go beyond expectations and create a fun environment for guests and staff alike. Ability to approach and engage guests and strike up conversations. Dynamic public speaking skills – performing arts experience a plus. Experience interacting with children, small groups and/or large audiences and the ability to adapt programs to audience age level and size. Confident ability to handle animals, especially reptiles and insects, if provided the proper training. Passion for marine biology, zoology and/or ecology with willingness to increase knowledge through ongoing training and professional development. Confident ability in handling animals, especially reptiles and insects. Model outstanding work ethic, manage own schedule and be dependable and punctual.

Scope of position:

Perform consistent, high quality presentations and Educational processes on a daily basis; consistently maintains excellent standards.

Physical Demands of the Job:

This job requires periods of standing and walking as well as extended periods of sitting with data entry. It will also require the ability to maintain a high-energy, positive presentation style for the duration of shift, occasionally lift up to 30 pounds, and ability to act original in front of an audience and occasionally portray a role in a variety of costumes.

Special Working Conditions:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an individual encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

• Schedule includes weekends, evenings, and holidays, excluding Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. May be required to work beyond your scheduled shift, depending on special events and staff attendance.
• Works a variable shift from 8:00 am to midnight, depending on departmental needs.
• Interacts with diverse populations and a wide variety of staff.
• Noisy workspaces, large crowds, along with cool and warm environments.
• Once training period is complete, requires handling a variety of animals in a safe manner.

Compensation and benefits

Part-time, non-benefited position. Will be eligible for membership/ticket benefits after 90 days.
