Description

Utah’s Hogle Zoo is announcing the opening of a full time position as a Relief Animal Keeper in the Animal Care Department. The selected candidate will be assigned to the Asian Highlands and African Savanna areas.

The Zoo is seeking a highly-qualified animal care specialist to provide superior daily care to a diverse group of felines including Amur Leopards, Amur Tigers, Snow Leopards, and Pallas Cats among others. In addition, the successful applicant will work in a dynamic, multi-species area with giraffe, zebra, ostrich and a variety of birds. Keepers are assigned daily husbandry responsibilities, to participate with conservation breeding programs, veterinary procedures, exhibit maintenance and animal demonstrations. Keepers are also called upon for media presentations, education programs, and caring for other animals as needed.

Applicants must be able to work effectively in a strong team environment, foster positive interactions with guests and other Zoo departments, serve as an ambassador for the Zoo and as a liaison with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. The desired candidate should also possess a strong commitment to wildlife conservation, animal welfare, and providing a high-quality guest experience. Excellent writing and public speaking skills are necessary.

Education and Pre-requisites

A minimum of three years of paid full time animal care experience in a zoo setting is preferred. There is a strong expectation of experience in operant conditioning and training techniques and the ability to uphold high enrichment standards. A minimum of two years experience with large cats required and degree in life sciences, biology, zoology or related field is preferred.

Applicants must be able to work under diverse and variable weather conditions and be able to safely lift over 60 pounds. This position also has the requirement to bend, stoop, jump, and stretch through-out the work shift. Good driving record required.
