Description

Grandfather Mountain Stewardship Foundation is seeking knowledgeable and passionate individuals interested in working in animal care. The Animal Habitat Keeper 2 position is a full time, year round position. This position will be 40 hr./week with the expectation of working weekends and holidays. The Animal Habitat Keeper 2 position is a great opportunity for an individual to acquire experience in the field of animal care and education. The position focuses on the care and upkeep of the resident American Black Bears, Cougars, North American River Otters, White-Tailed Deer, Bald Eagles and various educational animals as well as inspiring and educating our guests that visit the park about these amazing animals. Habitat maintenance and our animal enrichment program are also large components of this position. An ideal animal habitat keeper 2 will have a passion and love for animals, knowledge of animal care as well as local flora and fauna, good public speaking skills, the ability to follow safety rules, the ability to work as a team or individually, good supervisory skills, the ability to work efficiently and accurately, be capable of performing physically demanding jobs and self-motivated. Individuals must be able to work a flexible schedule including weekends, holidays, and emergencies, and must be able to work closely with other employees, volunteers and the general public. Major Duties:
• General feeding and cleaning up after animals
• Weedeating, raking and hauling debris
• Pond cleaning
• Habitat maintenance such as hauling concrete
• Animal enrichments
• Educating the general public and leading tours
• Helping organize and implement fundraising events
• Behavior and health observation including minor veterinary care and chemical immobilization
• Act as department safety representative
• Supervision of seasonal animal habitat keepers
• Training of assigned animals

Education and Pre-requisites

Qualifications:
• Possessing a degree in Biology or related field
• Domestic and/or exotic animal experience
• Public speaking ability
• Able to communicate well with children and adults of all ages
• Possessing or willing to acquire certification in First Aid and CPR
• Ability to take initiative and work independently or as a team
• Ability to be an effective supervisor
• Capable of strictly following policies and procedures
• Physically capable of doing habitat maintenance and able to lift 50 pounds
• Experience leading programs or tours or the ability to learn
